As spring draws near, and the snow slowly melts away, your poor car is showing signs of winter’s
neglect. A thorough cleaning is in order to help maintain the car’s value and reduce the risk of
long-term corrosion damage. Americar has a few “winter recovery” tips to ensure that your car is ready
to cruise through the upcoming months.
Interior: Getting your car properly dried out during the winter is impossible as wet shoes and clothes
bring moisture into car’s interior where there is not enough heat or ventilation to dry it out. Salt
and grime can discolor and damage upholstery and carpets, which can seriously reduce your car’s resale
value. Spring interior cleaning should include removing the floor mats to clean separately, and to make it
easier to shampoo and vacuum the carpets. Try to pick a sunny day so that the windows can be left open
to “air out” the vehicle while it is drying. Vacuum and shampoo seats with either a leather or cloth
upholstery shampoo, taking care not to over saturate cloth seats, and clean interior glass and surfaces
with appropriate cleaners for each material.
Exterior: Winter grime on the paint work should be removed with warm water and a “non-abrasive”
soap made specifically for exterior car washes. Start on the roof and work your way down so that the
stubborn dirt at the bottom is allowed to soak. Pay attention to the door undersides and sills, and make
sure soap is completely rinsed off before drying it off. Any minor areas of corrosion and paint chips
should be attended to at this stage as they will get worse if left alone. Use a good quality polish to
restore paint gloss and to help protect the paint from the elements.
Underside: Here is where winter does its worst damage because mud and salt spray cause corrosion
over time. Hose down the entire underside of the vehicle, paying particular attention to the front and
rear wheel arches. Once rinsed, pay attention to the tires by looking for faults such as tread wear, cuts,
splits or bulges which can cause safety issues.
And last but not least, check the engine oil, radiator, windshield fluid levels as well as the tire pressure.
